Remembering Elaine

I just heard Elaine Kaufman has died.  It was such an exciting moment for me to meet her.  She sat on her famous barstool in her famous Elaine’s restaurant.  She called me over, and had some nice things to say.  As a writer, I was thrilled.  George Plimpton, Gay Talese, Peter Maas–the kings of literary non-fiction had had the same conversation.  It took me a minute to realize she thought I was TC Boyle…  I straightened her out but she waved away the difference as if it were cheap cigarette smoke.  I liked her.
