The Rumbling

They are on their way, in airports, on highways.  They are packing creatures in deli cups and cake tubs, gassing up minivans and renting U-Hauls.  It is Daytona Weekend in the reptile world, the National Reptile Breeders’ Expo, advertised as the world’s largest reptile and amphibian meeting.

I’ve attended Daytona many times and this year I’m sorry things are too busy for me to get down.  I usually drove and I am already missing the event, the amphibian feel of the air as I slipped out of North Carolina into the first truly reptilian East Coast state, South Carolina.  Then on to Georgia and into Florida.

Reptile people know:  there is no feeling in the world like crossing the membrane that separates Florida from the rest of the country.  It’s the feeling children get knowing they’re almost to Disneyworld.  It’s that feeling, on steroids.
